Sonia Alleyne is a content, media, and career strategist who has developed effective messaging for broadly diverse audiences. As the Press Secretary and Director of Public Information for the New York City Department of Finance, she oversaw communications strategies and branding for the nation’s largest and most complex municipal tax administration.
Before joining the Department of Finance, Sonia was editorial director at Black Enterprise, responsible for content direction across multiple platforms including television, print, events, and digital, breaking editorial exclusives with top business talent. She launched and managed several brand franchises including the “Most Powerful Executives in Corporate America,” and commissioned the cover story “Black and Gay in Corporate America,” which won the 2012 GLADD Media Award for Outstanding Magazine Article.
In addition, Sonia served as a television correspondent for the Black Enterprise Business Report and Our World with Black Enterprise, syndicated TV programs focusing on financial and professional development. She is the founding editorial director of the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit, the premier annual leadership conference for professional women of color.
In 2009, Sonia co-authored Good is Not Enough: And Other Unwritten Rules for Minority Professionals (Penguin Books), which was nominated for an NAACP Image Award. She is also a contributor to Maria Shriver’s Tips for Life. In addition, Sonia has served on the advisory boards of Rainbow Fashion Week in New York City and the California Women’s Conference, one of the largest women’s conferences in the country.
Sonia is a graduate of Emerson College and holds a BA in Communications Studies. A mother of two, she resides in Brooklyn New York.
